Activity 2: Engagement

Here is the link to the Pear Deck presentation I created for protein synthesis.

Protein Synthesis Pear Deck

I had a really hard time uploading my own slides from powerpoint into Pear Deck.  I watched the instructional videos on how to do it, but could never get them to upload.  Once I gave up on adding my own pre-made slides I started to make a new Pear Deck.

I really like the student engagement of this.  I can see using this with students instead of kahoot or clickers.  It is truly an interactive tool and requires more thought out of them.  I like the option for students to answer in all types of ways (dots, text, circling, multiple choice).  A process like protein synthesis is a great application for this type of slide show because students need to really visualize it and that is hard to assess from simple multiple choice questions.

I highly recommend watching the instructional videos of Pear Deck.  I think they helped me realize that it is more appropriate for certain topics than other.  I still would really like to figure out how to turn my own powerpoint into Pear Deck presentations because I wouldn't want to create something like this for every set of notes we do, but would find it valuable to add a couple questions here and there or a question or two at the end as an exit slip of sorts.

I also like that I can control the pace of the presentation and that students can have the detailed images and video clips right in front of them on their Chromebook screen.  I think this would also help with student engagement.

This isn't something I knew about at all, but I can see my PLC using this for many of our formative assessments.  I am sold!

  1. Meghan - I also agree about the ability to promote student engagement. I think it offers a relatively simple way to give feedback and check for understanding. I also agree about it being a good platform for some topics and not others.

  2. Meghan - You were so excited to show me what you created and I really liked the idea of it all. Like you said, student engagement is really key in the classroom nowadays and adding technology to it all truly helps. I like how yours is protein synthesis and you added a lot of pictures that really help students focus in on the material. Do you think you would use this more for check-ins and reviews than you would use it for presentation delivery while incorporating formative questions? I do not know yet how I would want to do this only because I would want students to be taking notes on the slides I show them, but then also have their chromebooks out, which in reality is not a huge deal, but just saying. I do like that kids taking notes would not have to be like, "I can not see the slide," or "Wait what is that a picture of?" Definitely looking at my set of students though they will really benefit from this! Let's share all of our PearDecks we create to cut back all the added work we have to do! This could help us compare data too! ;)

  3. Thanks for the good example. This is exactly the kind of thing I would not have done if I didn't know that I had the set of Chromebooks. It is making me rethink what other things I could do differently.

  4. I love the idea of sharing Pear Decks! I'm glad this is all new for some. I got really excited the first time I saw it. Suddenly slides become inherent engagement and conversation starters. It's even better when you see it live in action with students.

  5. Yes! I agree with everyone...

Great idea. Great content. Love having the ability to share these with each other! I'm excited to see how they work with the chromebooks. Maybe we can play with them when we get together next week??
